These pieces are part of a series I call Antiquities Collages. They are figurative collages of black and white reproductions of antiquites. I was inspired in part by a bunch of discarded books which came into my possession. I loved their stark imagery and the range of color within the various so-called black and white reproductions. In August 2006, I also had the pleasure of seeing two powerful exhibitions on collage. One was the Joseph Cornell show at the Katonah Museum of Art (see Links). I have been a tremendous admirer of his since college and it was incredible to see so much of his work first hand and to feel his presence in his work. The other was the Dada show at MoMA. I was particularly interested in the collages of Raoul Hausmann and Hannah Hoch. They inspired in me a kind of irreverent freedom to be representational.

"Her monotypes...are among the exhibition's more refined inclusions."

Benjamin Genocchio, The New York Times

"...Joanna Astor's miniature Fairy Tale, an organic, colorful mixed-media work, makes a kind of abstract music that replaces representational narrative."

Doug Norris, South County Independent

"...Joanna Astor's small Surrealistic abstraction Hollow, conveys a mysterious place where angst meets experimentation."

D. Dominick Lombardi, The New York Times
