Artist Statement

My work revolves around the female – the tree of life, earth mother and mother earth/clay/earth/dirt/dust. I work with clay and cement, both from and of the earth. The touch of the clay is my inspiration. Cement allows the work to be monumental in size not just stance.

These figurative sculptures create simple strong lines in space through gesture and stance. The women—strong, rooted, reaching—are minimal; they are often faceless, linear, and yet suggest an individual. The surface remains rough and variegated reflecting my process. In combination, rhythmic line and negative space imply dance. The dialog created suggests a women forest with branches/arms gesturing and waving in ordinary conversation. Earth references include burnt earth (Holocaust and war), river’s edge, trees, bare branches, along with their earth-toned colorations. They represent my struggle as I continuously adapt to the ongoing changes in my life.

All my work is done as an emotional and instinctive response to the world around me. I cannot explain them intellectually; they grow from my hands and my heart.
