I recently watched again one of my favorite cinematic scenes from Ingmar Bergman’s Persona in which a young boy lies uncomfortably on a hospital bed with a sheet too short to cover his cold, slim body. His attempt to read is disturbed when a vague, blurry image of a face glows on a screen next to him. Despite his efforts to caress the image, the boy is unable to connect with the looming but remote person whose expressionless face slips in and out of focus and briefly changes identity. I realize on how many levels I relate to this scene with its underlying sense of futility as the boy is drawn to something compelling but ultimately elusive. As an artist I am fascinated by subjects that deny easy understanding but rather fluctuate between varied, even opposing qualities. In attempting to pin things down for close, precise scrutiny, I see that change and the loss involved with this movement complicates the process. Like the boy who is trying to grasp what is essentially untenable. I want to locate experience that is always shifting, hovering somewhere here.
