The narrative and symbolic aspects of images have been the focus of my work for a number of years. By juxtaposing images, in both individual works and installations, I suggest a multitude of possibilities, depending on the viewer’s state of mind and experiences, rather than “tell” a story. Mixed media provides me the best medium for exploring my visual concerns. Using sculptural elements, video, sound, and, or drawn, painted and photographic images, (often coated with layers of encaustic medium) I create visual and audio statements with both personal and public meanings. My recent work has been concerned with the interaction of the natural and human realms, both sacred and profane, and the often hidden, and evocative forms of flora and fauna. By building up and then scraping through some layers of encaustic medium, I reveal only some areas of the images more clearly. The works evoke the enigmatic nature of a dream, and imply emotional, psychological or spiritual states.

"Most of the best works...are led by Laurel Garcia Colvin's installation that features a small boat filled with sea salt, shells, books and pearls, accompanied by four two-dimensional works that blend color photography with encaustic paint on wood. These surreal images depict women and girls floating on beds in water, sometimes accompanied by Aztec symbols (The titles are in Spanish and English). It's heartening to see an artist create a dream world so completely her own..."

Georgette Gouveia, The Journal News

"In both art and literature, often the most effective way to address themes of universal scope and significance is, paradoxically, to examine one element that functions as a part standing for the whole. The hands in Laurel Garcia Colvin's mixed media works, though small, still, and self-contained, are synecdochical symbols of our humanity, the process of non-verbal communication, emotional and spiritual states, and a particular moment in history to which we stand witness."

—Rosemary Cohane Erpf, PhD., independent curator, exhibition catalogue essay, The Language of Hands: Laurel Garcia Colvin, 2002

"Laurel Garcia Colvin is a wonderful artist whose encaustic works, sculptures and assemblages draw people in by their sheer beauty, their spiritual depth and romantic nature and their meticulous proficiency. I have now visited Ms. Garcia Colvin's studio a number of times as well as having attended several of her exhibitions. I have seen a consistent positive reaction on the part of the viewing audience. Her works bridge the classical school of art with contemporary technology and genre."
—Livia Straus, Art Collector and Founder/President of the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art, Peekskill, New York, 2006
