Escapes Series:
I have always thought of myself as a naturalist.
The things that fascinated me were always in the realm of nature
and what I may
term the natural sciences. My eyes were always drawn to the small
details whether it is the branching of veins in leaves, spirals
of shells or color patterns of butterfly wings. This interest led
me into the field of biology and later into medicine. Being a physician
has given me the opportunity to travel extensively as a part time
ship's doctor and later as a medical lecturer.
Traveling in "exotic" areas
of the world such as Tibet, Indonesia and Turkey was at first sensually
overwhelming. I wanted
to capture so many new images on film then at some point equilibrium
set in and choices were refined.
The sum can be greater than the
parts however the parts are what make it. My attention seems
to frequently be directed to the details
and how they interact and contribute to the sum. I am always
in awe of light and shadow and how they change my perception of
strength,
solidity and tranquility. There is also a rhythmicity that is
obvious in steps railings and even in hanging laundry.
I can easily
become oblivious to the true nature of day to day surroundings.
Living in cities and caught up in the sress and
rush of life we rush past visual sensory gems. Even if there
are fewer
flowers to smell there is much else to feast ones eyes on and
nurture us.
