At the beginning there is an upright working surface, on which is pinned a horizontal wooden rod with many strands of fiber tied to it and hanging down. These are knotted row on row to each other in various ways, to create an image which is always a “mask”, in the sense that it has facial features such as eyes, a nose, a mouth. My fiber “masks” are an extension into three dimensions and into color of the kind of visual thinking involved in my black and white burin engravings. |
