| I
am continuing to work with the notion of experiential
landscape—inner and outer—perceived in part by
direct observation and informed in larger part by sensations
at the edge of conscious thought and vision.
My process
begins with execution of watercolors outdoors. Although
these often have their own lives as visual statements I am
interested in them primarily as a diary of line, shape and form— source material for studio work.
At this point in the process,
if not earlier, I introduce a grid element to be
buried and brought back to varying degrees as needed,
or reapplied, echoing the lines within. I have found the grid
to be a useful device for creating tension and order to the fields
of color, line and form a bone structure of sorts. The
sense of layering created through the addition of these "ghost grids"
open up a new vantage point; a means by which to move through
the levels of the work.
Often wide expanses of color play against
active, and/or delicate brushwork. Texture achieved
by scraping, pouring, blotting and splashing is
also integral to the interplay of layers, allowing greater or lesser glimpses of what lies beneath.
