Artist Statement

In one way or another all my work is about language. There are stories that want to be told, and many ways to tell them. The artwork takes various forms as each story creates its own vocabulary of images.

I am conscious of working in the common ground that art and language occupy as acts of communication, an awareness that is reflected in my artworks in form as well as concept. Drawings are often arranged in sequences that mimic the flow of text on a page or a scroll. Images that begin as representations of natural objects can evolve into calligraphic marks. An array of seemingly random objects appears somehow to evoke narrative.

The images above are from The Artist as Archaeologist, a recent installation in which I assumed the role of an archaeologist, engaging in activities common to artists and archaeologists: accumulating and preserving shards and fragments, documenting and organizing, repairing and assembling. The story that emerged integrated the scientist's task of finding meaning in random objects and incomplete evidence with the artist's impulse to imagine alternative possibilities, to conceive and build something new and beautiful from whatever materials are at hand.
