Artist Statement
"I want my paintings to offer a perceptual parade of multiple and diverse visual confrontations at once obvious and ambiguous: paintings which surprise me, which make the viewer say 'Wow!'. I love to paint."

"...paintings of Robert Kaupelis...are the painterly equivalent of nature's raiment...it is his structure as a carrier of color that makes Mr. Kaupelis impressive...elegant drawing...if he sometimes overdoes it, and is obvious in his bedevilment, Kaupelis's new paintings are also records of solid invention by someone steeped in the major painting of our time." William Zimmer, The New York Times.

"...Kaupelis works in a free style of bravura brushwork...well controlled by fine color and structure...He seems to me one of the most promising 'unknowns' on the New York scene." Cleve Gray, Art in America.

"...These are urgent canvases, often humorous, and always honest." Irving Sandler, New York Post.
