Artist Statement

A Mindflower is a representation of the formative powers intrinsic to the universe and the life system. The forces that are the universe have created my consciousness. I look back on the history of my becoming and from an intellectual/emotional reaction, Mindflowers emerge. Mindflowers are an extension of my being and a part of the continuum of all being. The forces that are the universe flow through me and result in the growth of sculptural form and expression. The process of interplay continues as you encounter this material and the Mindflower pollinates your mind with visions of interwoven being.

In the process of creating the Mindflowers, I have developed various techniques of direct construction using industrial polymers and fiber glassing materials.

One of the more interesting methods I use in constructing mindflowers has been dubbed lycra-gami, In lycra-gami a stretched fabric, tension membrane is constructed within a frame by first sewing a piece of stretch fabric (lycra) into a particular configuration. Then point by point the stretch fabric is hooked with a sharpened wire and stretched to the point that it is in tension. The membrane is frozen into place using various industrial polymers and fiber glassing techniques and removed from the frame.
