Artist Statement

My work is in the vernacular abstract not consciously related to any art movement, mainstream or otherwise. The water based pigment, no binders, on 100% rag handmade paper are materials with a magic that keeps my interest alive and meaningful in this fluid medium of watercolor. I want to paint and let my work articulate its own meaning.

"...Osyczka's paintings often deliver an extremely potent visual and emotional impact, perhaps surprisingly so for works in a medium traditionally considered delicate in intention and congenial for small-scale rendering. Especially in those paintings in which the dimensions reach up to seven or eight feet on a  side, making them mammoths of the medium, Osyczka has enlarged the scope and ambition of watercolor painting itself..."

                                                   Zimmerli Art Museum

"...As a result of the oversize development in the handmade rag paper for the medium, Bohdan Osyczka has had an opportunity to continually expand forms and shapes with color and tension in ever enlarging scale. Throughout this, his experimentation is always free without formula and never deliberate. Spontaneity with control...His utilization of color within a negative space can be subtle, electric and /or pungent. Nothing is haphazard. His total output firmly establishes him as one of a handful of abstract painters solely in the transparent watercolor medium..."                  Sutherland McColley
