Artist Statement

Robert Goodnough's surging geometric collage appears to extract itself from the two-dimensional plane of raw canvas. The figures individually present a flatness that is contradicted in the multilayered flock-like creation that comes of the repetitious non-perfect forms. Goodnough as said "there is a kind of joy that comes from working a problem through to a conclusion, and a satisfaction at a solution in which the artist separates the idea from himself."

Jacqueline Shilkoff, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art

(excerpt from brochure of the exhibition "Show & Tell:

         Universal Symbols Reinterpreted" 2008)

         Neuberger Museum of Art

"Goodnough ...continues to develop and refine a vigorous abstract aesthetic that he applies with equally dynamic results to painting, sculpture, drawing and collage."

          Helen A. Harrison, Director

(excerpt from catalog of an exhibition organized by Katie Stratis, 2002)

           Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center

"Although most people tend to associate Robert Goodnough with the Second-Generation Abstract Expressionists, he is really a maverick who has never belonged to any particular school of painting. He has always been interested instead in solving the problems created by a painting's two-dimensional plane - and the creation and manipulation of illusion, form and space."
Martin H. Bush (excerpt from exhibition catalogue, 1996)

             Tibor De Nagy Gallery

"He's one of the better painters of the time-which comes to saying he's one of the best."

Clement Greenberg (excerpt from exhibition catalogue, 1991
