Artist Statement

Bernard Rowan has been sculpting the human form from the live model for more than thirty years, beginning at Cornell University (B.A.-1974), and continuing at The Art Students League of New York, Brooklyn College (M.F.A.-1989), and the Westchester Art Workshop.

Each of Mr. Rowan’s figure sculptures represents his intention to combine an impressionistic and expressionistic quality with a visually true description of a human being. They attempt to depict spirituality within physicality. Usually sculpted in stoneware clay within a single working session, they attempt to achieve a Zen-like depiction of a moment, which is also a timeless description of a human reality. Concentrating on essential form in terms of mass, plane, and movement has given the figures their own vitality. After the year 2002, the artist began experimenting with a more complete abstraction yet retaining references to human form.

The sculptures are fired in a propane-fueled kiln, which was constructed by the artist at his home in 1999. His work has been exhibited in the New York City area and has been sold to private collections. To see more work by the artist go to mysite.verizon.net/bernardrowan.
