Artist Statement

I center my work on a fusion of two distinct things, a fascination with ancient cultures of the Pacific Northwest, and a compulsion toward modernist form. At present I am doing many small red and white paintings while reading myths collected around 1900 by the ethnographer John Swanton from the last great Haida myth tellers. He used a phonetic notation developed by linguists to record Northwest Coast oral literatures and there I find the locutions which are my titles. This is a romantic and painterly adventure into the Haida spirit and at the same time a creative discovery of timeless images.
