June 30th - August 12th (by appointment only) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Armonk, NY…The Studio: An Alternative Space for Contemporary Art (a not-for-profit arts organization) is pleased to host a site-specific installation by conceptual artist Shiela Hale. This mixed media artist makes extensive use of natural materials in her assemblages and constructions, working with them in a way that she describes as “collaborative.” She incorporates fragile and ephemeral material in her artwork in order to convey a sense of engaged dialogue with nature rather than detached observation. Ms. Hale’s way of working is a powerful, even emotional, expression of her deep love of the natural world and her concerns about irreparable damage to our environment. In a certain sense, Ms. Hale’s method of working resembles scientific research and scholarly inquiry as much as traditional forms of art making. Her lifelong dedication to the processes of learning is reflected in her extensive use of books and altered texts. In a review of a recent exhibit, The Artist as Archaeologist, Lorraine Gengo wrote, “Close observation and a questioning nature are prerequisites for both scientists and artists, and Hale’s work demonstrates that her sensibilities in those areas are exquisitely honed.” The artist is emphatic in stating that her art making is inseparable from her everyday activities and ways of thinking about the world. “I would like my art to suggest the possibility of an actively engaged relationship with art, with the natural world and with the obligations of citizenship.” Ms. Hale studied art at Syracuse University and holds an MA in Women’s History from Sarah Lawrence College. In 2001, she was awarded a US patent for her Level-Headed Shelves, a modular bookshelf with an internal self-leveling installation system. She exhibits regularly at the Silvermine Guild in New Canaan, CT, where she is a member. The exhibition is on view from June 30 through August 12, 2007 by appointment only. An opening reception will be held on June 30, 2007 from 3-5 p.m. The Studio is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm and by appointment, Tuesdays through Fridays. The Studio is located at 2 Maryland Avenue in Armonk. The exhibition is free to the public. For directions please call (914) 273-1452 or visit the web site at www.thestudiony-alternative.org. *****
