FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Surface & Shadow: Recent
Paintings
& Sculpture by Cathrin Hoskinson
March
12 - April 16, 2006
The
Studio, an alternative space for Contemporary Art, announces Surface
and Shadow , a solo exhibition of recent sculpture and paintings
by Cathrin Hoskinson. The show will be on view from March 12 through
April 16 2006 , with an artist's reception on Saturday
April 1 from 2-5 pm .
For
many years, nature has been the starting point for the works of Cathrin
Hoskinson. However, the artist does not treat nature merely as a separate
system to be inhabited. Instead, she sees the natural world as a mirror
of our bodies and as a place of memory. Branches may reference veins,
for example, and the ripples of water may allude to the inevitable passage
of time. Additionally, Ms. Hoskinson's works emphasize the effects of
light. In many cases, shadows are given as much reality as the solid forms
they echo. Her art can be appreciated for its formal qualities and for
the rich interpretative possibilities that are available to the sensitive
viewer.
The artist has explained her work as follows:
"I
like to use different materials as if I'm writing a poem, so that the
materials become another metaphorical element in the subject matter. For
example, aluminum evokes the satiny grayness of a cloudy day, copper suggests
the red glow of the setting sun, and brass recalls the illumination of
medieval paintings. When I was very young - with my small easel next to
my father's - landscape became a fascination for me. I was also affected
by a formative teacher, Yves Gaucher, who was a Canadian painter of melodic
and refined color field abstractions. A word he often used was "essence".
I think my works distill a certain essence from my observations of the
landscape."
Cathrin Hoskinson has exhibited her work at the Neuberger Museum , the
Katonah Museum , the Schoolhouse gallery and the Drawing Center in Manhattan
. She has received several awards, including a Canada Council Arts grant
and first prize in sculpture at the Silvermine Guild Art of the Northeast
exhibit. Her work is included in private and public collections including
Carlton University , The Bank of Nova Scotia, The Toronto Dominion Bank
and the Canada Council. Previously, Ms. Hoskinson worked at Argos Foundry
in Brewster. She holds degrees from Concordia University in Montreal ,
SUNY Purchase, and Hunter College . Formerly a resident of Westchester
, she now lives in New York City and maintains a studio at the Schoolhouse
Gallery in Croton Falls.
