New York City, NY…The Studio Annex is pleased to announce the exhibition, Perfect Circle: The Art of William C. Maxwell, which opens on June 12 and runs through February 23, 2007. The artist’s paintings are a part of a larger and continued investigation into humanity’s never ending quest for perfection.

Mr. Maxwell states, “The starting point for these works was my unending interest in the concepts of Nietzsche, especially by his opposition of the Apollonian and Dionysian, of the controlled and the free.”

This series of paintings pays homage to the great nineteenth century German philosophers and related philosophers and poets who have influenced him, all “dreamers of the absolute,” seekers of a utopian existence. As Elizabeth L. Langhorne writes in a 1994 catalog for these works:

“So, he paints absent absolutes. The circle represents the idea of the absolute, but it is an elusive circle: the passionate desire for perfection or completion leads not to completion, but to the passion of dialogue, the process of painting. Into this dialogue enter smaller dark objects, triangles, circles, ellipses, like dancers in the foreground of some mysterious stage. With his mantled frames Maxwell extends his dialogue to the viewer. Close to our everyday reality, these mantels tempt us to place on them our own “bric-a-brac…”

Mr. Maxwell received a Bachelor of Arts from Wagner College and a Master’s of Fine Arts and Education from Columbia University. He is in numerous collections including the Hudson River Museum, the Arthur Wesley Dow Memorial Collection at Columbia University, and the Brooklyn Museum.

The Studio Annex is located at 279 Fifth Avenue at 30th Street in the entrance lobby and reception area of Madison Industries Inc. Gallery Hours for The Studio Annex are Monday through Friday, 10 – 3pm.
