Armonk, NY (March 17 – April 15, 2007) The Studio: An Alternative
Space for Contemporary Art is pleased to host a solo exhibition
of works by Joyce Wenglowksi, a painter and mixed media artist.
The show, entitled The Power of Color: The Power of The Brush,
will include Ms. Wenglowski’s newest series of paintings,
which have been described as “rich in chromatic and gestural
strength.” (Gillian Greenhill Hannum) In creating these works,
Ms. Wenglowski has used luscious colors, such as chartreuse, turquoise,
tangerine, and azure, and her bold brushwork is an appropriate
complement to these bold colors.
The artist has explained her creative process as follows:
“
In these works I am continuing to explore my fascination with color.
What a joy it is to work with these highly saturated hues from
the South Pacific! Daily, I look forward to the challenge of balancing
color, form, and energetic brushwork.”
Wenglowski began her training at the Rochester Institute of Technology
and graduated with a BFA cum laude in painting from Manhattanville
College. She has worked for the past 26 years in her studios in
Katonah, New York and Deer Isle, Maine. Wenglowski exhibits her
paintings and mixed media works in galleries, museums, and colleges
across the region. Her art is included in private and corporate
collections, including Pfizer, PepsiCo, and Goldman Sachs and Co.
Wenglowski also shares her talents by participating in community
outreach programs. Recently, she created an 18 foot interactive
painting for The Cancer Care Center in Northern Westchester Hospital
in Mt.Kisco, NY. She currently serves on two art advisory boards
and is a facilitator for a number of local art programs.
In conjunction with this exhibition, the Studio is pleased to present
Seduced by Color: Joyce Wenglowski and the Painterly Tradition,
a lecture by Gillian Greenhill Hannum, Professor of Art History
at Manhattanville College. Ms. Hannum will discuss the work of
Joyce Wenglowski within the historical context of the “painterly” tradition,
which originated with the Venetian painters of the Renaissance.
Ms. Hannum will also talk about the expressive color and brushwork
of Delacroix, Gauguin, Matisse and the Abstract Expressionists
as groundwork for the understanding and appreciation of Ms. Wenglowski’s
work. This lecture will be presented on April 15th at 4pm. Reservations
are required for this event, and there will be a $5.00 admission
fee.
The Studio is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from
1pm to 5pm during exhibitions and by appointment. The Studio is
located at 2 Maryland Avenue in Armonk. For reservations, appointments
during the week or directions please call Katie Stratis at (914)
