FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Studio presents “Winter Solstice V: Expressions of Our Time and Place”

Armonk, NY...The Studio is pleased to announce their winter solstice series exhibition, “Winter Solstice V: Expressions of Our Time and Place.” The group exhibition features the work of ten artists (Ethan Andrews, Judith Braun, Marvin C. Cooper, Diane Janowski, Valeri Larko, Neil Ira Needleman, Michael Poast, Robin Rapoport, Claire Sherwood, Soon-ae Tark) from across the northeast region, all of whom are participating in the Solstice series for the first time.

Tedd Stratis, founder and director of The Studio, has selected these artists for their excellence and for the diversity of styles and media that their collective work represents. The show will include paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography and video. Furthermore, several new works will be added to the ongoing exhibition in the outdoor sculpture garden.

Mr. Stratis has described Winter Solstice V: Expressions of Our Time and Place as follows :

This year, The Studio received submissions from more than 100 artists, and I had the difficult job of determining who would be included in our annual solstice exhibition. In reviewing this large body of work, I allowed myself to respond freely to each artwork, evaluating the artist's handling of his or her chosen medium and seeking to understand the content of each piece. In other words, I approached my task with no pre-conceived notion or thematic statement in mind. Only after selecting ten artists on the basis of their individual works, did I begin to see certain connections among the works I had chosen -- certain common threads that united my selections into a coherent and meaningful exhibition. Simply stated, each artist in this exhibition is telling us something about our world. This is most easily seen, of course, in the photographs, the videos, and the representational paintings - all of which depict tangible elements of visual reality. These elements range from majestic landscape scenes of upstate New York ( Diane Janowski ) to piles of junk in urban centers around the world (Valeri Larko). But even the abstract artists are sharing with us their perceptions and their responses to specific aspects of reality. From the painter who uses flat stacked shapes as symbols of ritualistic practices (Soon-ae Tark), to the artist who creates rigorously symmetrical drawings to represent her understanding of the physics of our universe( Judith Braun ), to the sculptor who fashions non-objective art from the found detritus of our industrialized society (Michael Poast) -- all of these artists are working within the context of their experiences of contemporary life and translating these experiences into visual forms that we may perceive and enjoy.

Winter Solstice V: Expressions of Our Time and Place will be on view from December 16, 2006 through January 28, 2007. The opening reception will take place on December 16th from 1-3pm. On January 13th at 2pm, a gallery talk, entitled "Freedom of Expression," will be presented by Marcy B. Freedman, an artist and art historian. She will discuss the works in the exhibition as manifestations of the broad range of expressive options available to artists today. Reservations are required for this event, and there will be a $5.00 admission fee.

The Studio is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm and by appointment, Tuesdays through Fridays. The Studio is located at 2 Maryland Avenue in Armonk. The exhibition is free to the public. For directions please call (914) 273-1452 or visit the web site at www.thestudiony-alternative.org.
